Scientists map susceptibility to type 2 diabetes

Media_httpwwwscienced_gfnok

The advancements of science in the area of detecting human disease susceptibility have been amazing over the past few years. One day all the big diseases like diabetes, hypertension, aids, cancer, etc. will all be conquered. At least I think they will.

But will new diseases emerge? Or maybe chronic conditions such as obesity will rise in numbers and they will spawn new diseases. We know that obesity is a rising problem in North American school children.

This is something that needs to be addressed, now. A diet run rampant in junk-food is mostly to blame, with lack of activity a close second guilty party.

My paternal grandfather had type 1 diabetes, and it's what ultimately claimed his life. My mother developed type 2 diabetes, largely due to obesity and inactivity.

So many problems can be avoided if we plan ahead and plan our health. I'm one to talk; I need to lose weight and get in better shape as well.

Some people think that New Year's is the best time to start a new habit or get rid of the old bad ones. Yes it is a good time, but so is today. It doesn't matter what today is; just start a new habit!

Rooibos Information

Rooibos - the RED TEA from South Africa

In South Africa Rooibos tea is fondly known as "Bush Tea" and is consumed by the old and young, rich and poor and now all over the world as a caffeine free alternative to regular tea.

Those who have not yet tried this  tea for it's beautiful ruby colour, its affordability and wonderful taste, should consider the following:-

Rooibos Tea is a herbal tea that tastes like a regular tea:

It is prepared from the leaves of the herb Aspalathus Linearis.

Regular black and green tea is made with the Camellia Sinensis plants leaves

• Rooibos is unique to South Africa:

It is produced only in the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. Rooibos (pronounced “roy-boss”) is an Afrikaans word meaning “red bush”, referring to the garnet colour of the herb leaves after fermentation.

• Rooibos is known as to boost general health

The health benefits of Rooibos for both adults and children are quite remarkable!

• Rooibos contains NO caffeine:

Even decaffeinated green tea has 30mg of caffeine per cup!

• Rooibos has a wonderful flavour:

It does not taste like a herbal tea at all - only like a sweeter version of regular teas. Rooibos has no bitter aftertaste - no matter how long it is left to brew!

• Rooibos is an everyday / anytime beverage:

It can be enjoyed throughout the day - primarily because it is an excellent thirst quencher
Rooibos can be served clear or with cream and sugar/honey, according to your usual preference.
Served as iced tea, it is absolutely delicious!

• Rooibos is very versatile.

• Rooibos has been used in Africa for many generations.

Click here to find out more about the History of Rooibos

Rooibos! It is so delicious, I can hardly describe it. We have so many rooibos flavors available, it's hard to choose a favorite. Our herb tea that we like the most is rooibos orange spice. We also love rooibos spiced plum and rooibos vanilla.

It makes such a smooth, soothing cup of herb tea. It is relaxing and enjoyable to drink. I love that it makes me feel full and I eat less :- ) Yay!

My youngest son loves herb tea, and it settles down the hyperness in him. Maybe because he has to stir and sip it slowly, and it becomes a rhythm and motion for him.

We all drink herb tea, any flavor, when we're not feeling well. It always seems to cure what ails us. It is a great way to cut phlegm after a cold as well. Nothing goes down quite so well as a warm cup of liquid.

Speaking of that, I do think I will go make a cup to drink before I go to bed tonight.

'Rare' brain disorder may be more common than thought, say Mayo Clinic scientists

This article contains both good and bad news. It's good news that modern science has found a way to identify a "rare" genetic disorder, but bad news to find out it may be much more common than previously thought.

This neurological disorder is devastating, leading to death of the patient between ages 40 and 60.

What happens is that the brain's white matter deteriorates. In previous years, in many cases, patients were misdiagnosed with having schizophrenia, epilepsy, frontotemporal dementia, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke or an array of other disorders or diseases.

Because of this misdiagnosis, many patients were treated with drugs that only proved to have toxic side effects, and provided no help whatsoever.

Unfortunately, the disorder (called leukoencephalopathy with spheroids - HDLS - can run in families). The genetic nature of this disorder means that entire families can carry this gene and in fact, because of this new research, entire family clans have been identified as carriers. All carriers have the active form of HDLS.

Plum Pie Recipe

Check out this website I found at allrecipes.com

Plum pie...it sounds so good! I've never been one to like Christmas pudding much; maybe because it was never made in a way that I would like. I know I have had bread pudding, and other types of pudding. Mostly I really liked them.

I think the favorite type of pudding I have had was rice and raisin pudding with lots of cinnamon in it. I have no idea how to make it. I guess I would have to look around for a recipe.

But I think I will try this plum pie. The picture looks amazing. I can almost smell it! Speaking of smelling it, I can smell my turkey cooking and I need to go check it.

Talk to you later.

Fig-Pecan Energy Bar Recipe

Media_httpfarm8static_aajaa

These energy bars look incredibly good! It's definitely something I'm going to try. I never buy the energy bars at the store simply because they are just full of junk. I mean really, Dr. Ben Kim is right; they are only sugar with some protein powder thrown in and some fat for calories. I would much rather eat a chocolate bar with peanuts in it than an energy bar bought at the store.

Because unsuspecting health nuts assume an energy bar will be high quality energy, they pay an over-inflated price for them as well.

I would love to experiment with this recipe and see if it works as well with other nuts or other dried fruits. I am thinking that the stickiness of the figs is what holds them together. I doubt prunes would work.

Artichokes grow big in Texas

Media_httpwwwscienced_zhign

Oh how yummy! Artichokes are not only very yummy, they are also very healthy. I have never really studied them before. It would be interesting to see how they grow, and what they look like at every stage of growth.

I would especially be interested in seeing all the different ways of cooking and preparing them. I remember eating them as a kid. My mom would clip the tops of the petals off, boil them and them serve with melted butter to dip the meat into.

I know you can also buy small bottles of pickled artichoke hearts. Those are tasty as well, but I would sooner have cooked fresh artichokes than the pickled ones.

Survival in the Ice - Part 1 - YouTube

This is a very good video to watch, in fact watch all of Dr. Gordon Giesbrecht's videos on survival in very cold water. There are a lot of things I learned that I didn't know before.

One of the most interesting things was that you don't die of hypothermia right away. You have several minutes. It's usually that you end up drowning if you fall through the ice into frigid water. I will let you watch the video to find out why.

He studies thermodynamics of the human body; how the human body reacts under cold- and especially cold + wet, conditions.

Even though I don't go out walking on ice if I can avoid it, it's good to know these survival skills because I could possibly come upon someone else who has fallen through the ice, and then I would know what to do to help them.

Also, I can teach my kids what to do, in case they are ever out doing some kind of winter sports or winter activity and an accident happens either to them or to someone in their group.

Komodo Swallows Pig - YouTube

Just what you wanted to see, right? A komodo dragon swallowing a pig whole. Yuck. I would say that's kinda gross. But you know, it's all part of the circle of life. I feel sorry for the little piglet, but komodos have to eat too. They are probably an important element of their local habitat.

What is the origin of 'be there with bells on'?

What is the origin of 'be there with bells on'?

Question #34778. Asked by Jack Nesbit. (Jun 03 03 3:31 PM)

2mbarrassed2say

To be there with bells on means 'eagerly, ready to enjoy oneself.' One source suggests that this phrase arose when horses and carriages were the primary mode of transportation. On special occasions, say on the way to a party, the horses would be fitted with bells for a festive sound, echoing the carriage passengers' plans to enjoy themselves.
Or was it originally 'bee there with bells on' which referred to 'One that is extraordinary or remarkable' which is another way of saying humdinger.

It's so interesting to discover the origins of the sayings we use. So many of the original meanings have been lost or forgotten. Some of them are available by googling them, but I find that it is generally quite difficult to discover the origins. Sometimes talking to an older person can give you some clues, because they may remember life in their youth. Things that they may have used or activities they may have done will often provide some of the hidden meanings.

I imagine that almost every language/culture is rich in favorite sayings that get passed down through the generations.

Marine predators in trouble

ScienceDaily (Dec. 5, 2011) — Iconic marine predators such as sharks, tunas, swordfish, and marlins are becoming increasingly rare under current fishing trends, say University of British Columbia researchers.

In half of the North Atlantic and North Pacific waters under national jurisdiction, fishing has led to a 90-per-cent decrease in top predators since the 1950s, and the impacts are now headed south of the Equator, according to a new study published online December 5 in the journal Marine Ecological progress Series.

Funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), and the French Consulate-General in Vancouver, researchers from UBC's Fisheries Centre modeled the impact of fishing around the world using global databases of fisheries catches from 1950 to 2006 and satellite images of phytoplankton, which are used to map where predators should be, based on food availability.

The scientists found that the exploitation of marine predators first occurred in coastal areas of northern countries, then expanded to the high seas and to the southern hemisphere. The decline of top-of-the-food-chain predators also means widespread and fundamental changes to both the structure and function of marine systems.

"Species such as tuna have been seriously exploited because of high market demand," says Laura Tremblay-Boyer, a PhD student at UBC Fisheries Centre and lead author of the study.

"A constant theme throughout our study of global marine ecosystems is that these top predators are today prey for human beings, assisted by some serious technology," says Tremblay-Boyer. "Top marine predators are more intrinsically vulnerable to the effects of fishing due to their life histories. Bluefin tuna, for instance, cannot reproduce until age nine."

In addition to low numbers in the northern hemisphere, the study shows a dramatic decline in the south seas, where wild-caught fish are sent to northern markets.

"After running out of predator fish in the north Atlantic and Pacific, rather than implementing strict management and enforcement, the fishing industry pointed its bows south," says co-author Daniel Pauly, principal investigator of the Sea Around Us Project at UBC. "The southern hemisphere predators are now on the same trajectory as the ones in the northern hemisphere. What happens next when we have nowhere left to turn?"

Under current fishing practices, biomass loss of predatory species is expected to occur in the southern hemisphere, but humans living in the south will not be able to rely on the north for their fish, the research team adds.

Oh my goodness! With marine predators in trouble, and living in an environment that we can't see that easily, makes you wonder how the rest of the varied species on planet earth will fare above ground.

This is scary news. Kind of like the decline of the polar bears. What have we done people? We need to get off our hineys and help the environment around us right now. Yes it should have been done "yesterday" but unfortunately some people use that as an excuse for no action at all. That just doesn't work and we should know it!

It 's time for big, focused, massive action right now. Read the news. Do something. Do something massive today.

Chemical warfare of stealthy silverfish: Parasites hide by covering themselves in ants' scent

Media_httpwwwscienced_bzmrh

Wow this is interesting; the way that ants' and silverfish evolution has co-evolved. Ants use a complicated chemical scenting system to recognize each other within the nest. If you don't smell like one of them, you will be destroyed.

Silverfish love to live off of the ants' hard labors. They will inhabit the nest, eat the food, basically live a life of luxury, without giving anything in return. But of course, they don't smell like an ant, so they will be destroyed immediately upon discovery.

So, how do they manage to smell like an ant? They have devised this ingenious plan. They rub up against immature ants, which are defenseless. They must do this on a regular basis to keep the chemical scent strong enough.

Wow. What a smart plan.

Strategic Link Building Panda Edition

1:39 pm by

I got my hands on a review copy of Peter Garety’s new WSO “Strategic Link Building Panda Edition” and I have to say, I was pretty impressed.

I haven’t seen many WSOs, or for that matter, link building advice that shows you what kind of links to build, when to build them for maximum impact and give you checklists along the way to make sure that your link building efforts are staying on track.

As well, Peter is sending out a weekly link building schedule so you’ll always know exactly what you need to accomplish for the upcoming week.

Nice! This is where many people derail (including me!) as they get distracted, and forget exactly where they are in the link building process. Then the wrong kind of links get built at the wrong time, and really don’t help you rank your site. With Peter’s step-by-step system, you really can’t go wrong.

Peter includes a bonus social profile builder software in the WSO that will really help you speed up the mind-numbing task of creating profiles for link building on social networking sites.

Also, there is an unannounced bonus of a WordPress plugin, that will create instant back links for you. You just need to sign up for accounts at a six Web 2.0s, spin your blog post and you will be able to instantly post to the Web 2.0s with unique anchor text for each submission.

Here’s a link to the thread: http://www.warriorplus.com/linkwso/5x2tkx/5705

As well, check out my video review below. As usual, it’s one of my horrible videos, but I think that you’ll appreciate the hard work that Peter has put into this.

This is an awesome link building program. For those of you who are heavy into the SEO of websites, you already know that link-building is nothing less than mind-numbing. You can literally fall asleep at your computer trying to accomplish this task for hours on end.

This makes link-building programs which are efficient all the more essential.

Really, if you are going to invest so much time and effort into link-building, then 1) make sure all your links count 2) only make links that are effective, indexed and viable and 3) do it the right way the first time.

Peter Garety is known for his expertise in this area, and a good reputation follows him around on the warrior forum.

It is for this reason that I bought and recommend this product. Actually I would rather call it a program, because that's what it is. A program to get you on track and stay on track with a schedule of link building.

BBC News - Leveson Inquiry: Ex-footballer Garry Flitcroft appears

Media_httpnewsbbcimgc_kadfl

The media can't figure out when to leave people alone. There should be a line that they are not allowed to cross. Sometimes people in the public eye have a right to keep some things private.

How do we draw the line, where do we draw it, and who will enforce it? It's just crazy. It's sad what extreme media intervention did to this young man's father. He ended up committing suicide as a result of it.

There has to be someone that the media is accountable to. Part of that responsibility rests on all our shoulders. Stories sell because the population is eager to read trash on someone else. That's so twisted really. Does it somehow make us feel better to read about someone else in trouble? Is that why trash sells so well?

We all need a reality check.

Taking bushmeat off the menu could increase child anemia, study finds

Media_httpwwwscienced_idank

Well I never thought of eating bats for dinner, but for the rural families living in remote parts of Madagascar, bats are a part of their regular diet. Add lemurs to that as well. Unfortunately, there is a delicate balance between hunting and eating protected species and healthy hemoglobin iron levels in children.

And so the debate goes on. I personally think that if locals eat what they call bushmeat (whatever is caught in the wild), then that's their privilege. But I think that endangerment has come about because of other factors.

I'm not an expert. But when I think of children, I think of their needs being filled.

Cosmetic dentists also help with the problem of discolored teeth. There are several remedies for such problems, from bleaching to veneers. There is a cosmetic dentistry procedure available to treat any kind of dental problem.

BBC News - Egypt protests: Deadly clashes in Cairo's Tahrir Square

We don't know how lucky we are to live in a land that is not subject to constant turmoil. It would be just awful to live somewhere where there are always factions clashing and war going on. What kind of a place is that to raise a family?

It is no place at all. Only a peaceful place where children can grow up not knowing constant fear and constant war. I feel so bad for mothers trying to raise their children under such circumstances. My heart really goes out to them.

Penn State Is the Latest Institution Shaming America

November 18, 2011 RSS Feed Print

Penn State lost a football game last Saturday but America lost a lot more. Americans have lost confidence in the institutions they once trusted. If they don't clean up their athletic departments, colleges and universities will join the long list of institutions which have betrayed the trust of Americans.

Large institutions set the social and economic order that makes the United States grow and prosper. But these institutions have fallen down on the job. Professional sports, the Roman Catholic Church, and Congress, to name a few, have all spit the bit and let all of us down.

[Susan Milligan: Penn State as Guilty as Catholic Church on Covering up Sex Abuse]

Sex, money, or both have driven the scandals that have undermined American institutions. At Penn State, a witness told Joe Paterno he had seen Jerry Sandusky rape a 10-year-old boy. JoPa have may fulfilled his legal obligation by reporting the abuse to university officials but he fell far short of his moral obligation when he did not act to stop the abuse by reporting the incident to police or prosecutors.

The scandal at Penn State reminds me of the pedophilia scandal in the Roman Catholic Church. Disgusting behavior by individual priests and disgraceful cover-ups by bishops, cardinals and popes. I am a Catholic but I am ashamed of the crimes committed by my Church.

I love pro sports, especially baseball, but I and a lot of other fans have lost confidence in the integrity of the sport. In pursuit of big profits and mega salaries, Major League Baseball players and owners used or tolerated steroids. Who is the all time home run champion anyway? Hank Aaron? Barry Bonds? I vote for Aaron. Bonds had many more round trippers but he cheated by using steroids. Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire, and the rest should never be enshrined in the baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.

[See a slide show about sports and politics]

Sex and money have clearly shaken public confidence in Congress. Last week the Gallup Organization released a poll that indicated that trust in Congress is at an all time low at 9 percent. Polls indicate that most Americans believe that their representatives in D.C. will sell their vote for campaign contributions. Former Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Twitter) and several of his former congressional colleagues have added sex to the fatal equation.

The collision of public distrust of Washington with the advance of social media will force fundamental changes in the process of decision making in this country. Since Congress can't make decisions on the important issues facing contemporary America, people like the activists in the Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street movements have used the social media to take things into their own hands.

This is a crying shame. If our children aren't safe in our educational institutions, then where are they safe? This is more than just a "let down". It is more like a crash down. And to think that a rape was reported only to university officials and not even to police. What a darn shameful situation!

Herman Cain: How Do You Say Delicious in Cuban? | Fox News Insider

This is the silliest, nit-pickingest story I have ever had the misfortune to stumble upon. How silly is that! Just read it for yourself. Actually, all you have to do is to watch a 30 second video clip.

It's like they are looking for any little insignificant thing to smear any of the presidential candidates with. I mean really, it's like adking how do you say delicious in Canadian? I mean most people know Canadians speak english, but there could be a certain twist we put on the answer, like maybe we say, "delicious, eh!"

How utterly ridiculous this is!

International team to drill beneath massive Antarctic ice shelf

This is really interesting. It reminds me of the movie "The day after tomorrow". The research is important and can give scientists a lot of answers. However, it isn't something that I would even be remotely interested in doing. The thought of going out into the extreme cold and remote Antarctica; I would be afraid of taking one step onto the ice and then falling through and drowning in the ice cold waters, or maybe getting eaten by a leopard seal or something.

Florida and Dentistry

The State of Florida experiences a wide variety of weather phenomenon including very hot weather (109F or 43C), hurricanes, lightning, high average precipitation, tornadoes and thunderstorms. It’s not very well known that Florida has more lightning strikes than any other state. It also experiences the highest precipitation. There is also a record number of hurricanes and tornados in this state, with the tornados rarely reaching epic proportions, but the hurricanes can often be very severe. These weather disturbances are somewhat tempered by the fact that Florida is the sunshine state, enjoying anywhere from 2800 to 3200 hours of sunshine annually, depending on what part of the state is being measured.

Many types of animals make Florida their home. Some of these animals are fairly well known and others are indigenous only to the Florida state. This is a list of a few such animals. For marine mammals there is the Bottlenose Dolphin, the North Atlantic Right Whale and the West Indian Manatee. A manatee is also known as a sea cow. They are large, herbivorous creatures that are fully aquatic freshwater mammals. Some more well-known inhabitants are the American Alligator and Crocodile, the Eastern Diamondback snake and Leatherback Sea Turtles. Land mammals include the majestic Florida panther, Northern River Otter, Mink, and a large variety of rabbits, raccoons, skunks and squirrels. The list of birds indigenous to Florida is long and includes such wonderful species as the Bald Eagle, Osprey, Whooping Cranes and Florida Scrub Jay.

There are many reasons to make Florida your home, and these are only a few. Whether you are living in or visiting Florida, check out the high quality dental care while there. You will be amazed at how much your smile can be improved!

A beautiful smile is a window to your soul, and cosmetic dentists can make this window absolutely beautiful. You can tell a lot about a person just in the way he smiles. Unfortunately, many people are so self-conscious about the state of their teeth that they are reluctant to smile. Luckily, the tides are changing as cosmetic dentistry procedures are continuing to evolve. A beautiful bright smile is possible for everyone because of the advances in dental cosmetics, including teeth whitening, veneers, implants, crowns, shaping, bonding, orthodontic treatments and a combination of several processes. Only a trained and educated dentist can decide which treatment options or combinations of treatments are best suited to each individual patient’s needs. Most cosmetic dentists provide free consultations to address your dental needs and wants.

Cosmetic dentist Lauderhill are expert in what they do: transforming your smile. Do you feel confident in giving someone a big warm smile with teeth exposed? If not, then cosmetic dentistry is for you. Tooth whitening is one of the least invasive of the procedures used to transform your smile. It used to be called “teeth bleaching”, and it works wonders to remove discoloration and/or staining on the teeth. Not everyone’s teeth can undergo the bleaching process, so it is necessary to get a consultation from your dentist first. Tooth whitening is best carried out under the supervision of experienced an experienced cosmetic dentist Lauderhill, so don’t try the home remedy packs for tooth whitening that can be found at most grocery stores. Dental tooth whitening by a professional is recommended.

This is a pretty interesting article. There are a few points brought out about the State of Florida that are very interesting, and I didn't know about before. That would include some of the animals that live there, and that Florida gets so much sunshine. Well I guess that shouldn't surprise, because after all Florida is famous for oranges and all those good fruits.

Dentists aren't quite as exciting to read about. We all dread dental work, I think. Yet if you are talking about cosmetic dentists, then that is work that people look forward to having completed. A beautiful smile gives you so much confidence. I think it's worth it.

cosmetic dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is a common procedure these days, certainly improving in technological advancements over the past few centuries. The first article that talks about the history of cosmetic dentistry can be found here http://www.streetarticles.com/dental-care/history-of-cosmetic-dentistry this is important because when you consider how important our teeth are, reading the history behind the procedure becomes very interesting. It has never been a lot of fun for me to visit the dentist, perhaps because I never had my first filling until the age of 21. Therefore I was not used to seeing the dentist at all or having any dental work done at all.

I am sure glad that there have been a lot of advances in cosmetic dentistry. Another article which talks about this is http://www.streetarticles.com/dental-care/cosmetic-dentistry what makes this so important? Well partly reading about the scientific knowledge and advancements of our time is interesting, and partly because so many people go much farther than just repairing broken or missing teeth these days. It has almost become an obsession of looks. It's more than just celebrities who go as far as they can to look perfect. I have nothing against looking your best, I just think that you need to be careful about going overboard. Like some people do with botox and/or plastic surgery. That is just plain ridiculous in most cases.

However, fixing teeth that don't give you confidence when you smile is a very good thing. It is important for everybody to be able to smile whenever they want without feeling like they should have to hide their teeth. Nothing beats a big, bright white smile such as http://www.streetarticles.com/dental-care/cosmetic-dentists this article describes. If you were an employer and had two prospective employees of comparable skills and experience; one smiled and brightened up the room and the other was afraid to open their mouth, or always hid behind their hand. Who would you hire? I think the answer is pretty straight forward.

Therefore my conclusion is that while some people may go overboard with anything that improves their appearance, whether cosmetic dentistry or something else, it is a good thing to do what you can in moderation to improve your smile and your look. If it brings you increased confidence it is a good thing. If cosmetic dentistry gives someone a new lease on life and increased happiness because of the great look it can bring to your teeth, especially your front teeth that everyone can see, then it should be done.

How to Catch a Mouse With a Humane Mouse Trap

Media_httpimgehowcdnc_qigex

It's that time of year. It's time when mice try to find a way inside your home to stay warm for the winter and to have a source of food. Problem is, most of us do not want mice in our house.

Especially me. I certainly don't like finding mouse poops along the floor of my pantry or in my daughter's basement bedroom. Mice are not invited here, and because they come in anyway, they will be caught.

I grew up knowing only about the traditional mouse trap, the ones that snap down on the mouse and kill it. Apparently there are now many more ways to catch a mouse. And you don't need to buy a trap to do it either.

For those who would like to catch the mouse live and free it far away from their house, there are many options now available. I found at least half a dozen different make-it-yourself mouse traps on you tube.

So do your research, set your traps and get those dirty mice out of your house!

WWF - Press Release - Javan rhinos extinct in Vietnam

This is so sad to get the very final and devastating news that Javan rhinos are now extinct in Vietnam. A really sad story about how a few years ago when they were thought to be extinct, a small number of them were found. However, protection techniques were either not in place or not enforced and they have all been lost to poaching. They are shot and then their horns removed and they are left to die.

It is a crying shame that we humans have done this to many animal species. And yes I agree we are not all poachers and we have not done this individually but collectively we have, whether through poaching or not taking action against these horrible atrocities that are being committed upon these animals.

WWF: Change the way you think about your laptop - YouTube

This is very interesting! In fact the World Wildlife Fund has a whole series of videos that encourage us to change the way we think about everything. The way we think about food, about the world around us, about everything.'

We do need to change. We have lived too long thinking that we are not making an impact on the world. Many more people recycle than used to, but it is still a small percentage. Reduce and reuse are more important, because they are in the cycle before recycle is. It takes time, energy and resources to recycle. Those can be saved by reducing and reusing.

We need to think. We need to do.

The man who owned the Philippines: Mahal Kong Guro (My Beloved Teacher)

Post a Comment

This is a really touching story. It sounds like it is told in first person and is a telling of a true incident that happened to the author. I never realized there were so many problems in the Philippines. I knew that it is very difficult to find work there. That is one reason so many Philippine women leave their country to go and be nannies for other people across the world.

These women then send money home to their husband and children. What a hard life. I can hardly even imagine! This story is told by someone who has left the Philippines and lives and works in Saudi Arabia. From there he blogs about his home country on this blog so that he can somehow effect some change.

The X Factor - Home

Media_httpimages2itvc_apisi

X Factor UK is sooooo much fun to watch. The bands this year are amazing, and there are a couple of solo artists that are fantastic as well.

I can't choose a favorite, but there are a couple that I really love. It is so much fun to watch the banter between the judges, and Louis is definitely the anchor of the show.

I am following both X Factor USA and X Factor UK this year. Not that I have the time, but I just catch the highlights on YOUTUBE after they have aired. That gives me the best part without having to waste my time watching commercials.

If I could only watch one or the other, this year I would probably pick X Factor UK because some of the contestants are sooooo unusual. I want to see what happens.

I am sad for the girls on X Factor US because Simon Cowell's judging partner, Mariah Carey could not come because of hurricane warnings in her area. I think he is just going to be brutal, and I think that it is his least favorite category to mentor.

Physicists localize 3-D matter waves for first time

Media_httpwwwscienced_hcbln

Now this is Very interesting indeed! A theory referred to as Anderson localization. You have to really think about it. Can barriers that reflect sound waves result in the sound staying at its source, resulting in perfect silence? Because it never moves outward due to the destructive interference, it is considered as never having left the source.

It's a point that could be debated. Did the sound leave and then reflect back? Or never leave simply because no one ever heard it nor did technology detect it.

Hmmm. I will have to think about this one.

Toastmasters International - 10 Tips for Public Speaking

Media_httpwwwtoastmas_aqepu

I'm trying to decide if I want to join one of my local toastmaster's groups this year. I do want to but I'm not sure if I will be able to be committed to it. That's the problem. Yet I do really want to become better at being a public speaker. It's something I have always wanted to do.

This article gives you 10 tips for public speaking.
1) Know your material. In other words, you have to speak on something you are familiar with or at least do your research so that the listeners will know that you know what you are talking about.
2) Practice, practice, practice. I can tell you that Steve Jobs is a really great example of this.
3) Know the audience. You should greet them when they arrive, talk to some of them, get to know a little about them.
4) Know the room. Get to the room early and do a walk around to familiarize yourself with how much room there is to move in, where the steps are, etc.
5) Relax. Take a deep breath and let it out slowly. Don't seem tense.
6) Visualize yourself giving your speech. Imagine out the whole process and imagine your audience loving it.
7) Remember that your audience wants you to succeed. They want you to be interesting, entertaining and they are on your side.
8) Don't apologize if you feel nervous; your audience probably doesn't even notice it, so don't draw attention to it.
9) Concentrate on the message; not on the medium. Your message is the important thing, not your own anxieties.
10) Gain experience. Every speech gives you experience and gives you something you can learn and grow from.

How normal cells become brain cancers

Media_httpwwwscienced_euhdl

This is a pretty technical article, but it's very interesting the research they are doing into brain tumors. Brain cancer is a scarey thing, and it seems to be occurring at an increasing rate.

It makes you wonder what things are causing so much cancer in people? Pollution, radiation, and all kinds of other things in our environment are all contributors.

The more we can stay close to natural and away from toxic the better. That would mean what we eat, what we breathe, what we touch, and what we play with.

The research is taking place at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), which is considered to be one of the top departments in the entire world for this kind of research.

How to Become a Tutor: How to Become an Online Tutor

Check out this website I found at how-to-become-a-tutor.blogspot.com

A tutor has a very special calling. To find the needs of the individual and tailor her lessons to meet those needs. A tutor helps her students to learn confidence, both in the academic area of study and in life.

A tutor is in a position of trust.A tutor is someone to whom her students look up. A tutor is a one-on-one teacher and mentor for a student who needs help academically, and sometimes socially.

Many times youth are struggling in a subject simply because their self-esteem is low. They don't believe they can do it. They think they aren't smart enough. This is simply not true. Some students have high self-esteem and struggle because they lack the basic fundamentals in the subject. Other students know the basic fundamentals but lack confidence in using them.

A tutor must find out the root of the student's struggle. That is the true way to tutor.

mywhateverblog: Just another WordPress site

Media_httpwwwbeatutor_cyunu

Another tutoring site with great info about tutoring. This article gives tutors an idea of how they can continue to make tutoring income over the summer months by offering day camps. One of the most popular of these day camps is a math camp.

The students would come to your house for the day, and you would teach them math principles and combined with fun activities that teach math concepts and the application of those concepts to real life situations.

The opportunity to tutor and make money while you are helping someone else improve their academic standing is a field that is rapidly expanding.

Tutoring to Make Money

Filed under Be a Tutor - News by Peggy on Nov 5th, 2010

#

Tutoring is a good way to make money. But it is so much more than making money alone. Tutoring is formaing relationships with students. It involves helping them to gain confidence, and there is a great sense of job satisfaction when you see your students doing well academically when they put to use the skills you have taught them.

There are few professions as satisfying as tutoring. Unlike teaching, tutoring allows you to work one on one with each individual student. Lasting relationships can be formed with the families of your students, especially when tutoring multiple children in the same family or tutoring the same student over a number of years.

Tutoring also helps the tutor to stay up to date and fresh in their field, which is a great feeling.

But to know that you can make money while helping someone else is really an awesome thing. So many people are dissatisfied with their jobs these days. It's sad to see so much of your life oozing away to something you don't like.

Tutoring is very likeable, and it can be done part-time or full-time. The flexibility is amazing and you get to set your own fees. Don't under-rate yourself. Find out what other local tutors are charging and then pick a rate somewhere in between the highest and the lowest.

Cut-rates in tutoring don't earn you any trust. The fee you charge is an indication of the confidence you have in yourself. And for the parents, it is an indication of how much you can teach their child. So, don't go overboard and charge so high that no one can afford you, and stay well above the rock-bottom prices.

Rhino poaching crisis: Chinese Demand for Illegal Rhino Horn Fuels Rampant Rhino Poaching - Rhinos Driven Closer to Extinction

Media_httpwwwsavingrh_jjcfc

Okay I almost didn't blog about this because the article is so sad that I can't believe it. Especially if you scroll down on the original article and see the suffering that a mother rhino went through at the hands of humans. I wish I could call it something else, because the treatment they gave her is anything but humane.

Well we need to spread the word and make people more aware. Apparently China and Vietnam are the biggest culprits in the illegal rhino horn trade. Yemen used to be involved too but I guess not so much any more.

Wise up, people! There aren't even any medicinal benefits of rhino horn. It's just an overgrown fingernail! Gosh! Bite your own fingernails and leave the poor rhinos alone.

Books | Graeme Robin

Media_httpecximagesam_imzlq

This looks like an awesome book! The author is in his 70's, he goes traveling around Eastern Europe in this old Fiat car, and takes pictures of the places he's been, and writes about the things he has seen.

His website tells a lot more about the book and where he has gone. The pictures are amazing, and I love his writing style. It is of grumpy and funny and sentimental at the same time.

This book is really worth a read. If you have ever wanted to travel to far away places but couldn't, this book will take you there.

Loonie drops almost 3 cents - Business - CBC News

Media_httpthumbnailsc_nhjha
via cbc.ca

Looks like the Canadian loonie has dropped a few cents in relation to the American greenback. Lately when I have made online purchases I notice that the dollars are about neck and neck. Sometimes just a few cents difference, but I guess this is the first time since late January that the loonie has closed below parity with the U.S. dollar.

Don't know how long it will stay that way? I hope the loonie doesn't take a fall that's too much below the greenback because it makes online shopping so much nicer when I know they are about equal. :)

BBC News - Powerful Typhoon Roke hits Japan

Media_httpnewsbbcimgc_yiefc

Oh my goodness! This is incredible. The typhoon really dumped a lot of seawater on Japan! They are talking about the possibility of the rain forcing radioactive water into the sea. But that begs the question, "where is the radioactive water coming from?" Does Japan have radio-active tainted water supplies?

The storm is expected to hit ravaged Fukushima, a nuclear site. So maybe the rain would force radioactive stores into the sea?

The northeast coast has already been hit by the March 11th earthquake and tsunami. They are getting a double whammy this year.

The nuclear plant is taking every possible precaution against the typhoon, hopefully that will be enough.

So far only 4 people have been found dead, and 2 missing. Hopefully they can keep the death toll down by being somewhat prepared and planning ahead. Good luck to them. My heart goes out to them.
